Tiger's eye originates from falcon's eye, a bluish quartz variety formed by the intercalation of parallel fibrous crocidolite or similar hornblends. By pseudomorphosis from crocidolite to quartz with additional intercalation of iron a tiger eye is formed. The parallel alignment of the crystal fibres also provides the well-known light effect of chatoyance. Due to the special conditions of formation, falcon's eye and tiger's eye can often be found next to each other or grown together at the same site. As a gap filling in quartz rock, where the fibers of the tiger eye are perpendicular to the gap boundary, tiger eyes are mainly found in South Africa and Western Australia, as well as in China, India, Canada, Myanmar, Namibia, Ukraine and the United States (USA).
