Description

We only use natural gemstones, which are cut in an elaborate process and sorted by hand in a multi-stage selection process. After the first multiple sorting, the stones are cut and polished into a brilliant shape, after which they are sorted again according to size, colour and purity.

This requires a very well-trained eye that can recognise even the finest differences. Once the stones for a circle have been assembled, they are carefully placed in the setting by hand and fixed in place like a diamond. As a rule, a maximum of 1% of the respective rough stone can be used for our jewellery. In order to achieve the highest possible quality, all work is carried out by hand and by experienced specialists. As few foreign inclusions as possible and a striking colour are the characteristics that meet our quality standards. The typical colour of an amethyst is the colour of royalty, a rich violet-purple. It is available in all shades of violet, lilac and mauve. It is a variety of quartz that is the most prized.

The natural richness and infinite variety of quartz have made it the most widely used of all gemstone minerals. It often occurs in the form of six-sided crystals. It is found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, especially granite and gneiss. The physical properties of amethyst vary greatly from place to place. Experts can recognise where an amethyst comes from just by looking at it. Amethysts from Veracruz, eastern Mexico, are usually very pale, while specimens from Guerrero, southwest-central Mexico, are very colourful. The colour of an amethyst is very unstable and can fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Light-coloured stones can be set in a closed setting with a foil backing to intensify the colour. The purple colour of the stone actually comes from iron impurities inside. Deep purple colours are the most valuable type. Amethysts are graded, with the highest quality, darkest specimens being labelled ‘Siberian’, regardless of where they come from. Medium quality stones are ‘Uruguayan’ and lower quality specimens are ‘Bahrain’. Light-coloured stones are known as ‘Rose of France’. Amethysts have a hardness of 7. Amethysts are mainly found in the West Indies, southern Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, the United States, the Soviet Union, Australia, South Africa, south-west Sri Lanka, South America and Africa.
