Agate has always been a very sought-after decorative and healing stone, from which many art objects were already produced in antiquity. Its name probably goes back to its first place of discovery, the river Achates on Sicily. There it was already mentioned long before Christ by the Greeks in writing. But already in the old Egypt the agate was known, because from it the desired Scarabäen were cut, which carried as luck charms and protective stones each Egyptian with itself. Also in ancient Rome the wealthy citizens believed that agate slices gave them power and wealth. In the Middle Ages it was even believed that this gemstone could make its wearer invisible, also lightning and thunder should be averted by the agate from its wearer. The knowledge about the great importance of agate as a protective stone has remained until today and so it is still a sought-after gemstone today. With the popularity of the gemstone, the stone was soon artificially changed. Already in Byzantium the colors of the agate were strengthened by firing. Due to the worldwide locations and its variety of colours and shapes, agate has many synonyms and trade names. Due to the different compositions the individual varieties of the agate result, to which also different healing effects are ascribed. Thus it is used among other things as pregnancy protection stone and is to give comfort with separations, in addition it can be helpful with illnesses of all organs. Hildegard von Bingen also recognized the importance of agate in the Middle Ages and described its positive effect against snake and spider poison. The agate belongs to the most important healing stones at all.
